Ancient settlement of Kievan Rus Tumasch.
Tumasch is an ancient Russian fortress on the Stugna River in the ancient state of Kyivska Rus. Tumasch was an important stronghold, defending in the XI-XIII centuries, along with neighboring Tripoli and Vasilkov Kiev from Polovtsy.
There is no exact information about who he was founded, but it is possible that it was founded by the Kiev prince Vladimir the Great at the end of the 10th century. For the first time mentioned Tumasch in the Laurentian Chronicle in 1150.
This fortress was repeatedly besieged by the Polovtsians. Tumasch was devastated during the invasion of the troops of the Mongol-Tatar Khan Baty in 1237-1240. At the same time, the fortress Tumasch ceased to exist.
Fortress Tumasch area of 2.3 hectares occupied the high promontory of the left bank Stugna, below Vasilkov. From the floor, Tumasch was protected by a moat and a shaft with internal log structures. The entrance to the fortress was from the south-west. On this side, an extensive roundabout town of 8 hectares adjoined it, surrounded by two lines of ramparts and ditches.
Currently, the fort is located near the village of Starye Bezradichi, Obukhov district of the Kiev region. The landscape of the ancient settlement is almost completely preserved to this day.
